Addressing Public Safety in South & Central Phoenix: A Community Approach to Recent Shootings
Phoenix deserves better than the headlines we've seen this month. We’re calling out the failures in our current public safety policies and proposing a gritty, common-sense path forward based on personal responsibility and community action. Are you ready to help us turn the tide?
THE CITIZEN & THE ACTIVISTJUNE 2026
Understanding the Issue of Public Safety
Fellow Valley residents, it's time to speak plainly. Another weekend, another round of gunfire ripping through our neighborhoods. On June 13, 2026, just after 9 a.m., Phoenix police responded to a home on Darrow Street near 7th Avenue and Baseline in South Phoenix. What they found was heartbreaking: 40-year-old Carlos Galindo dead inside, a 37-year-old woman fighting for her life with life-threatening injuries, and a 35-year-old man also hospitalized. A suspect fled the scene. Witnesses heard the shots. Another statistic in a city that deserves better.
This isn't isolated. Central Phoenix saw a quadruple shooting near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road earlier in June. Drive-by killings in May. Triple shootings. Domestic tragedies spilling into the streets. South and Central Phoenix—our hardworking families, small businesses, and tight-knit blocks—keep bearing the brunt. Enough is enough. We can't sugarcoat it or blame "systemic" excuses forever. Public safety starts with accountability, real consequences, strong families, and communities rooted in truth, grit, and faith. That's the Salt & Light way.
The Reality on Our Streets Phoenix Police Department data and local reports paint a clear picture: violent crime, especially shootings, clusters in certain pockets of South and Central Phoenix. Gang activity, retaliation, drugs, and broken homes fuel the cycle. A drive-by near I-17 and Central in May left one dead. Recent incidents involve innocent bystanders, families, and repeat offenders who slip through cracks in a system that sometimes prioritizes politics over protection.

Our officers run toward danger daily. They face ambushes, split-second decisions, and criticism from those who've never worn the badge. Yet clearance rates for homicides lag in many urban areas because witnesses fear retaliation, and soft-on-crime policies erode trust. We thank our Phoenix PD for their service—every shift, every call. But we also demand they get the backing they need: full staffing, equipment, and political support that puts victims first. Families in these neighborhoods live with fear. Parents checking locks twice at night. Kids hearing pops that aren't fireworks. Grandmas praying at bus stops. This isn't the Arizona dream we built. It's a wake-up call.
Accountability First: No More Excuses Real solutions begin with personal and societal accountability. Criminals must face swift, certain justice—not revolving-door courts or reduced charges. Support laws that keep violent offenders behind bars. Back prosecutors who charge aggressively and judges who sentence based on facts, not feelings. Arizona's tough-on-crime reforms have shown promise elsewhere; let's expand what works here in the Valley.
Parents and guardians: step up. Fatherless homes correlate strongly with youth violence across every demographic. Teach respect for life, authority, and neighbors. Dads, be present. Moms, set the standard. Churches and community leaders must disciple the next generation in character, not just entertainment.
Elected leaders: stop the virtue signaling. Defund-the-police experiments failed spectacularly nationwide. Prioritize hiring, retention bonuses, and equipment for Phoenix PD. Streamline permitting for responsible concealed carry—law-abiding citizens deter crime. Crack down on illegal guns in the hands of felons, not harass grandmas at the range.
Faith-Inspired Community Solutions That Actually Work Here's the good news: real hope exists right in our neighborhoods. Faith-based initiatives, neighbor-led efforts, and proven partnerships are turning corners where government alone falls short. Salt & Light isn't just a slogan—it's action. Phoenix has strong models:
Block Watch and Neighborhood Programs: Residents, police, and locals team up for eyes on the street. Phoenix PD's Community Engagement Bureau runs Block Watch, G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods), and Crime-Free Multi-Housing. These reduce crime through vigilance and relationships.
Faith Community Partnerships: Churches, mosques, and synagogues serve as anchors. Pastors ride with officers, host "Coffee with a Cop," and respond to crises. Nationally and locally, faith-based mentoring cuts recidivism. Programs like those inspired by COPS Office Value-Based Initiatives bring police and congregations together for youth outreach, after-school programs, and conflict resolution. In Phoenix, faith leaders train for safety and partner on violence interruption.
"Public safety starts with accountability, real consequences, strong families, and communities rooted in truth, grit, and faith."
Imagine more: Church security teams trained alongside police. Youth sports leagues run by men of faith teaching discipline. Prayer walks through high-risk blocks followed by job training and fatherhood classes. We've seen crime drop dramatically in other cities when believers step up—not as social workers, but as truth-tellers offering redemption alongside responsibility. Local success stories abound. Residents in South Phoenix organizing clean-ups, business owners mentoring at-risk youth, and nonprofits bridging to jobs. One Valley church runs a re-entry program where former offenders find work, accountability partners, and a new identity in Christ. Recidivism plummets when men encounter grace and expectations.
Community Safety Plans along I-17 and key corridors use tech, outreach, and partnerships to reclaim streets. Expand them. Support Phoenix Police Chief's Advisory Boards that bring diverse voices—including faith leaders—into problem-solving.
