Escaping the Valley for Prescott, Payson, and Jerome
Let’s be honest: by the time late summer rolls around in the Phoenix Valley, everyone is fried. While the rest of the country is pulling out light jackets and posting pumpkin photos on social media, we are still locked inside an air-conditioned bunker, waiting for the pavement to stop radiating heat. The constant triple-digit stretch makes you forget what fresh air actually feels like.
Fortunately, you don’t need to book a cross-country flight to find a break.
The moment you start climbing in elevation—hitting that sweet spot around 5,000 feet—the atmosphere completely changes. The thermometer drops a very welcome 15 to 20 degrees, the daily highs settle into a comfortable mid-70s or low 80s, and evenings finally call for a light sweater. Best of all, you can make the drive in under two hours.
If you're ready to trade the hum of the AC for pine needles and mountain breezes, here are three weekend getaways within striking distance of the Valley.
1. Prescott: Everybody’s Hometown
Drive Time: Roughly 1 hour 45 minutes northwest via I-17 and AZ-69
Elevation: 5,368 feet
Prescott is the classic Arizona mountain escape for a reason. With its historic Victorian homes, shaded courthouse square, and roughly 800 historic buildings, it feels worlds away from the sprawl of the Valley. By autumn, daytime highs settle right into the comfortable low 70s, making it prime weather for just walking around.
What to do: Grab a coffee and wander down historic Montezuma Street (Whiskey Row), then head just minutes outside town to hike around Watson Lake. The massive, jagged granite boulders rising out of deep blue water look unreal in the fall light. If you visit on a weekend, the courthouse square usually has local vendors and live music going on.
Where to stay and eat: Book a room right on the square at the historic Hotel St. Michael. For dinner, grab a booth at The Palace Restaurant and Saloon—you can literally stand where old west outlaws used to hang out.
2. Payson: Gateway to the Rim Country
Drive Time: Roughly 1.5 hours northeast straight up the Beeline Highway (AZ-87)
Elevation: 5,000 feet
If your version of an escape involves tall pine trees, winding canyon roads, and the smell of damp earth after a rain, point your car toward Payson. As you climb past Fountain Hills and watch the saguaros fade into ponderosa pines, you’ll feel your blood pressure drop.
What to do: Take a drive along the edge of the Mogollon Rim (Forest Road 300) for jaw-dropping drop-offs and sweeping forest views (keep an eye out for elk herds). If you want a fun day trip, check out Tonto Natural Bridge State Park just north of town to see one of the largest natural travertine bridges in the world.
Where to stay and eat: Ditch the hotel and grab a cabin rental tucked back in the trees near Pine or Strawberry. Stop by a local spot like The Green Valley Restaurant for a hearty, no-nonsense meal, and make sure you track down some fresh homemade pie before heading home.
3. Jerome: The Cliffside Ghost Town with Soul
Drive Time: Roughly 2 hours north via I-17 and AZ-89A
Elevation: 5,000 to 5,200 feet
Jerome is completely unlike anywhere else in the state. Built right into the side of Cleopatra Hill high above the Verde Valley, it’s a former copper mining camp that transformed into a quirky arts community. The streets are steep and winding—so steep that the local jail literally slid off its foundation decades ago and moved down the block.
What to do: Spend an afternoon exploring the local artisan shops, glassblowing studios, and historic ruins. Drop by the Jerome State Historic Park to get a feel for the town's rugged mining past, and stop by a local tasting room like Caduceus Cellars to sample local wine while looking out over the entire valley.
Where to stay and eat: Stay right in the thick of it at the historic, famously haunted Grand Hotel Jerome. For dinner, book a table at The Asylum Restaurant for great food and panoramic sunset views over the valley floor.
A Few Quick Tips Before You Go
Beat the Friday Rush: Everyone else in Phoenix has the exact same idea on Friday afternoon. If you can leave by mid-morning or wait until Friday night, you’ll save yourself a headache on the I-17 or Beeline.
Pack Layers: Don't let the desert fool you. A 75-degree afternoon in the mountains can turn into a chilly 45-degree evening the second the sun goes down. Toss a jacket in the trunk.
Book Early: Once the Valley gets that first little tease of cooler weather in September, cabins and boutique spots fill up fast.
Load up the car, roll the windows down, and go trade the concrete heat for some clean mountain air.
